About the Essay Contest

Mayor Derrick R. Wood is excited to invite the youth of Dumfries, Virginia to participate in the, “If I Was Mayor For A Day,”  essay contest.  We want to know what you would do if you were mayor to make the town of Dumfries an even better place to live.


The essay contest is meant to provide the youth of Dumfries (from grade 5-12) the opportunity to learn and understand the function of the mayor and to employ their vision to improve the town of Dumfries. All entries must be submitted by December 31, 2019. Winners will be selected from elementary, middle, and high school. 

The contest winners will receive a cash prize and become an honorary Mayor for a day!  Mayor Derrick Wood will present the award to the winner at a council meeting in 2020.


Contest Rules

The contest is open to all Dumfries students enrolled in the 5th to 12th Grade during the 2019-2020 school year.

Essays must be 200 – 500 words.

Essays must address the subject of what the student would do if they were mayor.

Essays must show that the student has a clear understanding of what the mayor does.

Only one essay may be submitted per student.

Essays will be judged based on originality, persuasiveness, understanding of city, town or county services, and proper use of composition and written expression.

Essays must be received by Tuesday, December 31. Winners will be notified in March 2020.

We retain the right to publish essays along with the names of each student*.
